why i don’t believe in USA’s idea of college

College is great for some people. For others, it’s a waste of time.

I look back on icons: Shakespeare (I LOVE SHAKESPEARE) or Bethoven or Monet, Dali, and more. There is something that they all have in common: a sort of maniacal passion for what they do. It consumes them and drives them to learn and dig deeper. But they dig deeper on their own. They learn not for grades in college but for the sake of learning more about what they love.

Yes, some people need the discipline of the USA’s higher education system. Hell, some people even need the discipline that the military offers. And that’s just fine. But others don’t. Instead, they spend their time doing the traditional thing — going to college — until finally someday they have the courage to make the leap and go for it…

Lady Gaga said in last month’s ELLE interview: “I loved NYU, but I thought I could teach myself about art better than the school could. I really felt New York was my teacher and that I needed to bite the bullet and go it alone. I wasn’t interested in going to frat parties and doing those sorts of collegiate things.”
